It's funny, I just bought the book that two of the articles are based on (New Rule's of Lifting for Women) and the WODs in the book incorporate BB thrusters and DB snatches; the previous edition that was directed towards men that came out less than two years ago did not. CrossFit's influence being felt far and wide...

7:30 pm
Gabrielas-688 Columbus ave b/w 93rd and 94th (right near 1-2/3 on broadway at 96th)

I wanted to find a user friendly menu for the Paleo, zone and greg's "Kill everune" diet:so Gabriela's has
three vegetarian dishes
i
f its grilled fish u want they have snapper, and salmon
if you are looking for salads-they have plenty-with and without chicken, beef or shrimp and I think there are lots of nust floating around
they have cevice
their mole sauce is paleo friendly-made from pumkin seeds!
there are plenty of chicken, steak and rib dishes (u can hold the sauce GREG but i WILL make fun of you!)
those of u who are not doing paleo and are on the zone and want to plan ahead there are of course more options:
tacos, empanadas, fajitos, burritos, chimichangas, taquitos, enchiladas,flautas,quesadlias- and plenty of beans and rice!!
as for other carbs-mexican beer, "michelada" (Mexican draft beer with sangrita rimmed with chili powder), infused tequilas, the best margarits on the upper west side ,including frozen, sangria, premium tequilasaged tequila (year and older) and other great cocktails. Finally they have a pretty nice white and red wine list and some great desserts!
You can visit www.gabrielas.com if you are on the zone and want to plan ahead.
so have I sold you guys on this?
so far from our box I have Hari, Sarena, Rob, Me, Xuan Mai, Edgar, Jeff(?), Greg, Denise (who now is a kettlebell expert I hear) Court and Morgan as "Yes"
-I know Moon, Keith and Josh are away.-the latter three in Sundance.
So if anyone can make it we would love to have you come-for dinner, or even for a drink or dessert-please email me at michellefoxman@yahoo.com so I can give the place a final count-
oh and in case tabata shots were on anyone's mind-they do offer mexican hot choclate with a shot of Patron Citronage-the only pure natural orange liquer distilled in Mexcio and exported to the US! But we migt have to take that onto the sidewalk.
Also no gifts please!!!
Thx everyone!
I would appreciate getting a final count so please email me to confirm that you are coming and if you are bringin someone along (significant other, your dietician or whomeever)
Michellefoxman@yahoo.com

Posted by: michelle at January 10, 2008 8:59 AM
Michelle....way too much tequila in your OJ this morning! I guess kids will do that to you.
Appreciate you looking out for the lives of fellow NYers. I am really about to stab someone over a slice of bread, I swear.

Happy Birthday, Sarena! I hope you have a wonderful year of IF, PRs, PUs, HDL, LDL, CFTs, SDLHP, MBCs, LOLs, etc.
Posted by: Tyler Durden at January 10, 2008 9:37 AM
Thanks, bday is Jan 23! Will have to come to bos one day for my own special bday WOD.
Hope you can all join the celebration. I think Michelle is trying to get me to be non-paleo for a day. Ouch, like she thinks indulging on cake and booze is good for me. Sorry, I just don't know. I really am a bit anal...
Oh and yeah, the best and only present I want is your participation in making this a year to remember! Btw, Michelle tequilla in your morning OJ suits you just perfectly!
THANKS.

greg is a recovered member of AAAA but i think the 1/2 sleeve thing was partof the recovery porcess. if he stops wearing it its back to the LOL! keep it on greg. doing fine.
Sarena-didn't you read my post (three times) salmon, snapper, salads, mole sauce (read pumkin seeds) -you can stay on your diet! they have WATER there too. and they even have fruit for dessert. u can stay completely paleo happy on ur bday. That is why i checked-for u and anyone else who was worried. the rest of us however will be happy to drink the sangria and order some fried banannas!
Posted by: michelle at January 10, 2008 10:07 AM
Hey Michelle, of course I am appreciative. Just kidding around here with my pals!
Posted by: sarena at January 10, 2008 10:11 AM
Nice one Rob!
Posted by: sarena at January 10, 2008 10:12 AM
Nice Robzilla! It is refreshing to know that I am not alone but thanks to Dan Def for noticing my affliction, I am now getting the family support I need. The 1/2 sleeve is a part of that commitment to just saying no.
Keith it's not too late. But you may need to wear one pant leg at your rate!

Two good clips from NPR's "On The Media". Streamed audio, text transcripts and/or downloadable mp3's available on links.
Food Fight
For decades, the consumption of news has complicated our consumption of food. So says Michael Pollan, professor of science and environmental journalism. He explains how health studies, the reporters who love them and especially food labels have left us poorly fed and informed.
http://www.onthemedia.org/episodes/2008/01/04/segments/91474
Pollan's basic rules:
Don't eat anything that doesn't rot.
Don't eat anything that your grandmother wouldn't recognize.
Don't eat anything that has a strange and unfamiliar name.
Don't eat anything that has high fructose corn syrup.
Don't eat food that has health claims on the labels (as this is almost always done on processed foods.)
Grading on the Curve
Americans overwhelmed by a glut of nutritional suggestions may have hope. The food industry is searching for a new way to standardize such information. The University of Washington's Adam Drewnowski has created his own 100-point system for rating food, which may find its way to your grocery shelves soon.

Ich bin slightly confused. Either way, count me in with bells on.

Oh and by the way, this workout sounds like the best thing ever!
Just thinking about this workout has me grinning like some kind of blonde Cheshire cat. I'm serious guys, i'm sure i'm not the only person like this. Or is it some kind of weird reaction to being on the zone again.
I call it the Crossfit "lamb gambol" effect. Having way more energy than the average person (sleepy just out of hibernation bears), wanting to exert yourself in random situations (pull ups on subway, holding breath between subway stops, vaulting fences/gates, taking stairs 3 at a time etc).
I guess what i'm saying is, that Crossfit seems to give me a more playful exuberant energy, like a lamb that just gambols around for the hell of it. (Irrational Exuberance?)
Anyway, i'm going to skip to wholefoods to buy some tea!

Sarena happy birthday and many more. I'll be away for a while so Iwill not be able to be at your party.Wish everybody the best for me.
see you soon,

Sam-the 18th is just getting together for the sake of celebrating greg's cocktail arms.
the 24th is getting together to celebrate sarena's birthday

making a rare weekday afternoon appearence:
207 or 209 total. Get some.
Posted by: dan def at January 10, 2008 4:19 PM
Tabata Shmbata:
with 65# barbell.
back squats 12, 11, 10, 9, 9, 8, 9, 9
push press 8, 4, STOP
hang power cleans 13, 8, 6, 7, 5, 4, 3, 5
Total 140?
My shoulder was screaming at me so I had to stop. It was bugging me before I started the wod but I think the back squats made it worse. After 2 rounds of presses I decided to give it a rest. Cleans hurt the hell out of my hands but I liked the way my forearms felt.
Going to take an active rest day tomorrow and train with Erik Owings again but I'll go easy on the shoulder. Maybe I'll get to practice some of that BJJ stuff I learned in DC. Coaching in bk Saturday and Sunday so if I do anything this weekend it will be tabata squats.
Must let my hands heal and give my shoulder a break. See ya'll on Monday.

My apologies to Marisela for putting her in such a precarious position. Such dirty minds you people have! The actual conversation was very innocent and in regard to her brand new Buddy Lee jumprope. I merely said:
"If I had one of those, I'd never leave the house."
See - very innocent!

Jacinto,
You're too tough for this to me anything more than an annoyance. You're the man.

Sam,
The 18th may be the beginning of a trend for Black Box members to get together when Friday is a Rest Day (once every 4 weeks).
Rob, Dammit, and I decided over dinner at the end of the Portland Cert that we ought to start something like this. After all, we probably have more in common with one another than we do with most of our colleagues and/or classmates.
Posted by: Hari at January 10, 2008 6:26 PM
miss u jacinto-if u were at the box my pullups would be much better!. but i DID deadlift 185 the other day-Your quarter "advice" helped me along! not bad for a pr? I owe that to you! best wishes!
when u come back i want a bottle of that awesome drink u made at the holiday party! :)
