Things will be slowing down this week for Thanksgiving. I'll post the updated holiday schedule shortly after I confirm who is around to teach.

A great time was had by all of us that went to Pittsburgh this weekend. Thanks to our hosts, Jennifer and Mike! I will post some photos when I get them.

Welcome back all - I'm certain the legend of the badassitude of The Black Box has only grown with your representation.

Time to toss an idea out I've been munching on for awhile.
CrossFit NYC Urban Challenge Mission 8: "Subway with a floor of spikey, poisoned lava swimming with rabid alligators."
Starting at one end of a car (hand or foot touching one end), one must make their way across the car to touch the other end. Travel is exclusively through the use of the horizontal and vertical stainless steel poles in the car. No touching the floor or side walls of the subway car, chairs, window frames or people is allowed. (Some allowance may be needed for doorway crossings depending on car design.)
Beginner: Trip completed on a subway car at rest.
Intermediate: Trip completed from doors close to doors open on a long express trip.
Advanced: Trip completed from doors close to doors open on a short local hop.

Welcome back ya'll. Look forward to coming back to the Box and getting some of the new tips you brought back. Keith I can still see your big head in the midst of all those people! :-)

So Moon I see you've been watching Indiana Jones movies over the weekend again.

Hey People

My phone broke this weekend so send me a text or email with your numbers.

I'm putting up some pictures right now from the cert this weekend. I'll post the link

Okay, raise your hand if you're bored at work today. I have nothing to work on today or my half day tomorrow. I wish I had a kettlebell here...or some rings. I'd even settle for some parallettes to do l sits. I am so bored.

Posted by: Brett_nyc at November 19, 2007 1:56 PM

I have work to do, just don't feel like doing it. Been looking at old WODs from the mothership.

Posted by: Justin at November 19, 2007 2:06 PM

Jacinto-I will bring the 12kg kettlebell in on wed for you if you still want it ok? I couldn't carry it along with Avery's 16kg one today. Just confirm you want it-I paid $82.95. Just let me know for sure! Thanks!

Posted by: michelle at November 19, 2007 2:11 PM

Yeah I am so bored and I have work to do to! Looking at online movie trailes at yahoo.com. Check out the I am legend Trailer-hot. Question-in the trailer Will Smith is doing behind the neck pull-ups. I'vr read that trainers discourage them because they say it puts pressure on the neck. Thoughts?

Posted by: Jack Bauer at November 19, 2007 2:15 PM

Anybody see Simpsons last night?
Marge opened up a chain of women's mirrorless gyms called "Shapes".
Alan Moore was a guest star.

Hey CF Trainers, we should definitely take time to work on this skill!

Posted by: Jack Bauer at November 19, 2007 2:28 PM

Greg, yeah those are bad. Look at his neck all bent forward...

Posted by: Brett_nyc at November 19, 2007 2:36 PM

Yeah, but to be fair, HE IS THE FRESH PRINCE!!!!

Posted by: Justin at November 19, 2007 2:41 PM

LMAO Justin high five. That was funny!

Brett I think the neck has to be slightly arched though.

Posted by: Jack Bauer at November 19, 2007 2:42 PM

I'll join the "at work and bored" club.

Just munching on half a pound of chicken at my desk, colleagues looking on in shock and awe.

Posted by: sam at November 19, 2007 2:58 PM

i am bored.
muscle up training at work....hmmm
damn those air vents above me dont look too sturdy.

im thinking stariwell stuff. or maybe pullups in every doorway. maybe air squats in the elevators.
but then security might start calling me the squatter.

Posted by: juan g, at November 19, 2007 2:59 PM

Some skills-benchmarks I want to hit in 2008, not including wod times...

5 unbroken nice deadhang muscle ups, I can do plenty kipping
Freestanding handstand
Clapping HSPU against a wall
Clapping pullup
over 900 Total, I'm at 875 right now

Posted by: Brett_nyc at November 19, 2007 3:03 PM

Juan - maybe we need to make up 30 Rockeneering.
How about climbing the steps from one floor to another - then as many steps as it took, you do that many pushups at the landing. Repeat.

Posted by: Moon at November 19, 2007 3:04 PM

Brett, like hell you can't do a clapping pull-up, are you kidding me? You probably just haven't tried yet.

Setting benchmarks you've already reached is very Wally-esque.

Posted by: Ewen at November 19, 2007 3:22 PM

You're right. I haven't tried. :) Maybe I'll try. Have you tried it?

Posted by: Brett_nyc at November 19, 2007 3:25 PM

maybe he meant to say

Clapping pullup over 900 total, i'm at 875 right now

impressive stuff ;)

Posted by: sam at November 19, 2007 3:26 PM

Since we are sharing, some skill benchmarks I'd like to hit in 2008

Clean and press my body weight.
Snatch my bodyweight
Fran time of 6 min or less.
30 straight kipping pullups.
7 unbroken deadhang muscle-ups.

And a nicer dress for next year's Halloween Fran.

Brett have the stuff you want you can probably already do you slacker! Put some effort into your workouts man! :-)

Posted by: Jack Bauer at November 19, 2007 3:38 PM

Jeff- the Simpson's last night was a classic. With a few subs, it could easily be about Crossfit.

I'm busy at work, but taking an internet break.

Brett-- I love the idea of a Crossfit-New-Year-Resolution post day. Every Box member has to post their 2008 Crossfit goals. They should be lofty, but attainable (kinda like Crossfit Total goals.) Speaking of which, Brett, if you're at a 875 total right now, I'd say your 2008 goal should be hitting the magical 4 digit mark of 1000 on your total.

Then we can have a Festivus Extravaganza

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festivus

We can have Feats of Strength and discuss all the ways we've disappointed each other this year.

Keith can go first. If there's time left over (which there probably won't be) the rest of us can air our grievances.

Posted by: dan def at November 19, 2007 3:39 PM

LOL Sam! That sounds about right.

Brett, it's all in your head, trust me. You can probably kip said head into the ceiling, so once you're up there, why not let go of the bar and clap your hands? Give it a go, it's only daunting the first few times.

Posted by: Ewen at November 19, 2007 3:42 PM

what about a bunch of running around the city this christmas, singing carols and doing burpees in front of some the big commercial gyms.

leaving them all wide eyed (and covered in CFNY stickers) in our wake.

Posted by: juan gonzalez at November 19, 2007 3:46 PM

i meant a bunch of us. Can the comments be set to automatically preview after hitting submit?

Posted by: juan g. at November 19, 2007 3:49 PM

Hey Brett why don't you really see what you're made up off and play street hockey on 5th avenue? If you can avoid a total of 875 cars now that would be impressive!

So would saying "being able to Turkish Get-Up Josh" be lofty or crazy?

Posted by: Jack Bauer at November 19, 2007 3:49 PM

Brett
Ewen really helped me learned how to get a decent clap this weekend. Pretty much, the key tip was: bring your chest to bar height before you try to clap. I had a hard time getting to the clap because I was trying to clap after my chin got over the bar.

Time for a new resolution.

Posted by: Jeff at November 19, 2007 3:51 PM

http://www.festivuspoles.com/pages/Festivuspoles.htm

We already have a Festivus Pole Forest at the Box!

Posted by: dan def at November 19, 2007 3:56 PM

Hmm. Sounds like something to try next time I'm at the Box. Speaking of which, that probably won't be till after Thanksgiving. Headed home to SF for the Eating Holiday. Gonna swing down to the new North Santa Cruz Box for a wod and probably HQ too. I haven't been to the SF branch, so, for sure there too.

Posted by: Brett_nyc at November 19, 2007 4:02 PM

For those of you who need some visual instructions on the rules of Festivus

http://youtube.com/watch?v=HQFLqMyo0fo

Posted by: Jack Bauer at November 19, 2007 4:17 PM

Dan - GREAT idea. But Keith would likely use too much time to express his dissappointment in us.

Maybe he should send evaluation notes home with us with short Ke-structive comments like "does not seem to understand where the knee is and where the elbow is despite multiple repetitons", "squats with the confidence of a blindfolded nudist in a cactus patch", or "to say 'you clean like a retarded person' is a double smear against the mentally disabled".

Then we can bring the notes back after the holidays after they have been signed by our parents.

Posted by: Moon at November 19, 2007 4:45 PM

So if we're doing festivus, I guess that means that Keith, Court and Josh need to be wrestled to the ground and pinned?

Posted by: sam at November 19, 2007 4:46 PM

great to see the nyc crew this weekend! looking forward to visiting you all in the new box, and a rematch of xf boston vs. nyc. not that the results will change. kisses!

Posted by: ec at November 19, 2007 4:47 PM

I don't know about that Sam...Keith is a purple belt in BJJ and Court did Aikido for over 10 years, and the Ant was a UFC fighter. LOL. That might be one aspect of the tradition we skip unless we wrestle each other.

And I'm not wrestling Jacked-cinto!

Posted by: Jack Bauer at November 19, 2007 4:52 PM

Wait hold up....who the hell is ec and did we get beat by CF Boston and did they have the audacity to talk shit on our page? Inconceivable!

Oh Keith you better fess up homie! What the hell is this about!

Posted by: Jack Bauer at November 19, 2007 4:56 PM

Uh, yeah, and don't forget Mike. We'll have to ambush them (separately, of course).

That must have been one heck of a Beantown team, 'cause those weren't exactly our worst elements we sent to Pittsburgh.

Posted by: Ewen at November 19, 2007 4:57 PM

DAMNIT BAUER!!!!!! YOU WERE WARNED ABOUT ABUSING CUTSIE LITTLE "LOL." THAT IS NOT A "LOL" STATEMENT. NOW YOU SHALL SUFFER THE WRATH ABOUT TO BE THRUST(ERED) UPON YOU.

Posted by: dan def at November 19, 2007 4:59 PM

My bad Dan. I was so good. Damn...I owe you a thruster Dan!

But who did we lose to? Names- I want names. I smell a rivalry...NYC and Boston...it's on!

geez u guys are bored. So took me a while to figure out AllisonNYC wasnt Allison hence no pics on her flicker site they were on A2's myspace site pretty cool cert pics. Looking forward to maybe start scheduling now for a big group of us to go.

Posted by: juan g. at November 19, 2007 5:04 PM

maybe a cert in Boston. bust some heads.

Posted by: juan g. at November 19, 2007 5:08 PM

Can someone link the pics?

Also, the Ant was a UFC fighter? As in, fought in actual fights in a cage on TV?

Posted by: sam at November 19, 2007 5:10 PM

Additionally,

wasn't there some sort of fighting training on Saturdays before? Who did that? I really want to start doing some sort of martial arts and doing it at the box would be convenient.

Also, something about it being dark and wintery and approaching xmas makes me sort of excited and kid like and posting numerous messages on this message board seems like a logical progression.. or something.

Posted by: sam at November 19, 2007 5:12 PM

greg are u still on heavy painkillers???

Posted by: michelle at November 19, 2007 5:14 PM

I'm pretty sure its because its a rest day Sam. I'm thinking about maybe just giving up on rest from the box altogether, its overated.

Posted by: juan gonzalez at November 19, 2007 5:26 PM

fear not, black boxers. its all documented on video to be released soon. and in true boston form, we came back from behind to take the win.

neal, ec, jon vs. michael, brian, and allison.

first team to 3 wins of 5 events. some strategy involved, had to pick people for each event without knowing all the events to come, and each person had to be used before competing a second time.

boston, 3-2 after six events due to a tie in the 5th.

Posted by: ec at November 19, 2007 5:33 PM

oh, and jack bauer - let your crew fill you in on who the hell 'ec' is.

Posted by: ec at November 19, 2007 5:35 PM

Posted by: juan g. at November 19, 2007 5:37 PM

doesn't that stand for emergency contraception?

Posted by: juan g. at November 19, 2007 5:41 PM

boys
please before talking smack know who and what you are talking about. Boston did win the competition, the score was tied each team had 2 wins and a draw. The final event was pullups and it was the two girls. Allison (A2) went first, had an awesome showing and set a new PR of 13 pullups. EC stepped up and rocked the house with 20. It was a great perfomance by all. Althoguh a little rivally between city's could be fun.

Posted by: juan gonzalez at November 19, 2007 6:02 PM

who the hell is ec? that sounds so sweet greg. Anyway ec is an awesome chick from Boston. You'll see.

Brett: I'm pretty sure CFSC isn't HQ anymore. Enjoy yourself out there. That new gym is sweet.

i blame the boys from the 12:30 class for the way i feel right now. they INSISTED that they wanted to make up filthy 50. i protested, but my tiny voice was not heard in the big manly room.

then, keith deciede to do "baby elizabeth" as a warm up!

i feel like i got hit by a truck.

kinda falling asleep

Yes I was one of the stoopid people who insisted on the Filthy Fifty today, which I now regret. 36:23 as rx'd. Was hoping to do a little better but we did Baby Elizabeth right before that and it smoked me. Didnt help my Fifty time.

Posted by: Ewen at November 19, 2007 6:33 PM

hey Allison, I'm looking forward to it. I trained with Brendan last winter on a horrible wod...

185lbs DL, 10 bar dips, 2x20' rope climbs, max rounds in 20 min. Sucked.

Posted by: Brett_nyc at November 19, 2007 6:41 PM

I'll post some of my '08 goals since we are on it:

Break 1K CFT (currently 900 [SQ-320, P-170, DL-410])
Planche Pushups
One Arm HSPU
One Arm Chinup
Clean and Jerk 2xBW
Snatch 1.5xBW
Run 200m in 22 seconds
Pole Vault 13'6"

Oh, and, Brett, I reccommend NOT doing clapping HSPU's against a wall, at all. Those are actually more dangerous than freestanding. It's easier to smash your head into the wall and more dangerous to bail out. Much safer if you practice it freestanding, even with a "spotter".

So, Josh explained on Sunday about the workout regimen of prison inmates and the inspiration for his well known "Jail House Walk".
He also mentioned how certain "Alpha Male" inmates would be able to pull this countdown off with 30 as the starting number of burpies. I made a slight modification and did this tonight at the East Side River track.

"Death Row Run"
20 Burpies, Run 100 meters, 19 Burpies, Run 100 meters....down to one.
~31 minutes.

I don't think this counts as a warmup anymore. The 100 meter runs seem like a break at the beginning, and turn into ongoing torture by the end.

Have to make this WOD up in a bit at my local NYSC. Still trying to finish my thesis to turn in tomorrow. Almost done!

Wow, well here is one occasion where I would root for NYC over Boston. We have finally found it!!! And Ill even go so far as to say I want in on some of that action next time.

Anyways, did the Eva T. heavy Austere workout tonight at the box. Did it in 14:15. Im pretty sure it wasn't quite as brutal as the one on the vid, but we tried our best to make it so, and those TGU/snatches are killers any time, and it kicked our butts for sure.

Posted by: Justin at November 19, 2007 9:43 PM

I cannot wait to see the Boston vs. New York video. It was a hell of performance on so many levels. Everyone put out a great effort.

I love it when Josh reminisces about his days in prison. Ask him about his "drop the soap" workout.

Showed up a little late so didn't get the thing with the bags. Instead, just did Lil Elizabeth. 5:41 (not including some time for Jacinto to help correct my cleans).

Then got bored - worked on ring dips. Then remembered that in the summer, I was just nosing into that last 90 degrees of skin-the-cats and thought I would see where I was....Bingo - all the way! Feeling frosty, I then tried for clapping pullups. Managed to get the hands together, but not a solid clap sound. Soon...soon...

Molly/Kevin/Juan/Robzilla - thanks for a fun time out.

And one of you knows that you're doing a free pullup before 08. Hell, I might be tempted to go double or nothing for before December.

Marisela

I can't believe

1) I'm getting blamed for that Filthy Fifty. Three guys in a row walked in for the lunch time class and asked if they could make up that workout.

2) Lunch class didn't even do the full baby elizabeth for the warmup. I made you do 15, 12, 9 instead of 21, 15, 9 because it was a warmup. That's only 36 reps.

3) It took you you more than 5 minutes to do it.

4) You're whining.

There is nobody to blame for the Filthy Fifty other than Chuck Norris. And Chuck Norris doesn't accept blame or American Express. Chuck Norris accepts donations in blood.

Posted by: Tyler Durden at November 20, 2007 7:00 AM

you guys just rock.
