CROSSFITNYC FIELD TRIP ALERT--THIS THURSDAY!
Let's go see Dammit read from his about-to-be-published (and awesome--I read it already) novel, "Lapdance" at my friend Rachel's reading series. Here are the deets:

IN THE FLESH EROTIC READING SERIES
VIRGIN NIGHT
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18th at 8 PM
AT HAPPY ENDING LOUNGE, 302 BROOME STREET, NYC
(B/D to Grand, J/M/Z to Bowery, F to Delancey
Admission: Free
Happy Ending Lounge: 212-334-9676
First-timer readers and first-timer authors lose their literary virginity at this very special evening of erotica. Featuring six writers you've probably never heard before as they dare to go where they've never gone before! Jasmine Clemente (velvetaddiction.com), Colette Gale (Unmasqued), Jane Lockwood ( Forbidden Shores), Sean Manseau (Lapdance), Robert W. Cabell (The Hair-Raising Adventures of Jayms Blonde), and Steven Padnick (Roar of Comics blog). Hosted by erotica author and editor Rachel Kramer Bussel (He's on Top, She's on Top, Crossdressing, Hide and Seek). Free candy and cupcakes will be served.
------------------------------------
Oh, and Dammit promises to read something "fairly perverted." Hells yeah. See y'all there, and I recommend getting there early if you actually want a seat. The reading series is VERY POPULAR and often a third to half of the audience has to stand.

So apparently I contracted mono, the junior high school equivalent to an STD...
Wondering if anyone else athletically involved has contracted this, and knows what's "safe" to do after the initial onset has passed. The doctor said no strenuous exercise for a month...considering what passes for strenuous in this day and age I thought I would ask the board for advice.

According to WEBMD:
Risk of ruptured spleen following a mononucleosis infection
Mononucleosis (mono) may cause an enlarged spleen, which could rupture if you are hit in the abdomen. A ruptured spleen is serious and requires immediate surgery to correct.
To reduce the risk of having a ruptured spleen, avoid heavy lifting or contact sports for 3 to 4 weeks after you become ill with mono or until your doctor says it is safe.

Prolly best not to push it too hard. Don't wanna have our first casualty at the box and have the ensuing media fiasco.

Street run with more than enough stoplights, still PR by 2min. Sub 60min next time.
At no time was I totally gassed ala Fran, Helen, etc, even after my last 3 block sprint. I think i probably need a fast running partner to push me on these 10k's and 5k's.
Posted by: Brett_nyc at October 16, 2007 11:05 AM
Ah, mono. Wreaked havoc in my cross-country skiing days, although I slipped through somehow. So, who's been sharing your water bottles lately? ;-)
To answer your question, it really varies from person to person. For one thing, you should be able to tell if you've got it bad or if it's only minor. There's bed-ridden for days mono, and then there's I-don't-feel-quite-as-strong mono. I would certainly recommend taking a week completely off to get an idea of where you're headed. If you keep training, you might remain fatigued for several weeks and take longer to recover. Depending on how you fell, you can then ramp it up slowly. If I were you, basically, I would leave the high intensity workouts aside for at least 2-3 weeks.
Maybe take this opportunity to focus exclusively on form (lifting) and technique (rowing)?
Posted by: Ewen at October 16, 2007 11:29 AM
I agree with Ewen. Take some time off. Rest. Eat right. If you have excess energy, consider doing some light form work with a pvc pipe, stretching, joint mobility, gentle yoga.
Get cleared by your doctor before coming back to the Box.

Thanks all,
Looks like I'll be going to yoga for the people for a month.

speaking of injuries.
my hamstrings have been all weird and tight for the last couple of months.
I get uncomfortable at work sitting or just driving. Its not so much as pain, but a weird uncomfortable knotty/tendony feeling and its more prominent in my left leg. Drives me nuts, but its not as bad as to wanna go see a doctor.
Posted by: juan g. (the g doesn't stand for genghis) at October 16, 2007 12:08 PM
Hey Juan, is it up near where your hamstring meets your glute? I get tight there a lot and have to stretch it a few times a day. Do bent knee toe reaches, with an arched back to stretch that out.
Posted by: brett_nyc at October 16, 2007 12:46 PM
no brett, its actually closer to the area behind my knee. Wonder if its ligament related...I stopped doing the samson stretch figuring maybe that had something to do with it. no luck though.

I demand to know what the workout will be tonight!
Posted by: sam at October 16, 2007 2:01 PM
lunch wod
Thrusters
3-3-3-3-3-3-3
65-95-105-125-135-145-155
Posted by: juan g. at October 16, 2007 4:33 PM
Good idea, Juan. Stop stretching altogether since you're so flexible you don't need to stretch anymore. Especially the Samson stretch since that has nothing to do with your hamstrings.
WTF!?
Posted by: Tyler Durden at October 16, 2007 5:16 PM
lunchtime WOD of heavy thrusters, 7 x 3:
65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95 (1x)
decided to try 95# one more time, got 2 reps before hitting failure
Posted by: Allison at October 16, 2007 5:45 PM
Juan, you ought to try some foam rolling. I've found that has loosened up tightness and scar tissue from my legs a lot.
Posted by: Brian D. at October 16, 2007 6:21 PM
68:00 in record NC heat. My lower back tightened up and I stopped for 5 minutes to give it a good stretch. Not a PR but reasonable.
Posted by: Nick P at October 16, 2007 7:57 PM
10 to 1 Kettlebell swings and squats (16kg)
10 wall ball sit ups (6 lb ball)
1 to 10 Gi Jane burpee pull ups (ridiculous!)
(10 rounds counting down for kbs and up for gi janes)
18.37
It was fun :)
Posted by: sam at October 16, 2007 9:30 PM
Good thing we worked our thrusters today cause tomorrow is a date with Fran.

10.5K (went a little too far)- 49:38
A little slower than I was shooting for (was going for sub-48), but I'll take it, especially with the slightly extra mileage.

Todays noon WOD
Thrusters 3x3x3x3x3x3x3
95,115,125,135,145,155,165(last rep was ugly and up on the toes but got it up there.
Came back later to do Helen
11:24 as rx'd
Was shooting for sub 10 but running at 530pm and those damn stairs slowed me down big time. Almost took out this lady and her kids going up the stairs and some pedestrians in the street. This UPS guy was hatin' and looked like he wanted to throw a box at me.
