NOTICE: Temporary Class Cancellation/Relocation

Due to an issue with the building, we're going to have to cancel tonight's classes and hold this weekend's classes in Central Park at the Ross Pinetum Playground at 10:30am. Check the blog for more details regarding next week as we know more. Thanks.

[A quick clarification: earlier today, though not connected to anything that happened during today's workout, a chunk of ceiling collapsed in the office below us. Hence, to ensure your safety and the safety of those directly below us, we're temporarily putting classes in the Box on hold, as we find out more about structural stability, etc. As you'd imagine, we're at least as shocked as you are, and we're working hard on getting indoor classes back up and running as soon as humanly possible. Apologies for the inconvenience, and see you in the park. - Josh]

The issue has nothing to do with the structural integrity of the building. The cross beams between our floor and their ceiling are more than adequate. The problem is the incredibly cheap nonstructural work that was done when the place was converted to office space.

The sheet rock was attached using nails so short that they barely went one inch into the cross beams.

This isn't our fault. In my opinion, kids jumping up and down on a bed would have brought down their ceiling sooner or later.

Make sure to wear a "Respect" shirt to the park if you have one.

Can't wait to get back. Tough weak at work, so made one class. I did the sprint workout on my own and tonight did the 15, 15, 15 squat routine.

Body weight: 180
BS: 15
FS: 15
OHS: 7, 8
After 7 on the OHS I dropped the bar on my back. Not the best feeling.

Nails!!! You can't nail Sheetrock. You must screw Sheetrock. Building code is explicit about number and kind and length of fasteners for Sheetrock. If the work is out of compliance than it's all on the landlord - period. And if it was in complance there wouldn't have been a failure. Suggest a call the department of building for code violations if they give us any trouble.

Best, Kim

Looks like I took the right week to take off.

Self Pity

I never saw a wild thing
sorry for itself.
A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough
without ever having felt sorry for itself.

Do not be a victim
To self-pity.
Self-pity is at once
The beginning and the end
Of life's uselessness.

What the heck?? I just tried to post but the page closed

I put my safety in jepordy tonight by hopping a park fence after it closed and had it all to myself minus a few crackheads and drunks.
I did 21, 15, 9 "box" jumps and pullups in 5 minutes flat.

Not having a gym totally blows but I'll be in the park at 1030. No drinking or singing for me tonight. If someone can bring one of those "girl" shirts for me to buy I'll wear it. I'll bring a scissor:)

doh! did i say something wrong?

Posted by: dammit at June 1, 2007 10:28 PM

With a name like Dammit you can't say anything right!

Posted by: Tyler Durden at June 1, 2007 11:01 PM

A2, if you keep making promises like that, we'll have better attendance at all our events. ;)

Posted by: Tyler Durden at June 1, 2007 11:02 PM

Allison-I signed up for Pitsburgh as well-roomate needed?

A2 my 3 year old would be happy to take her scissors to my extra cf "girly" t shirt and make it any size you want. It also may have its own interesting pattern.:)

crossfitbklyn: row, row, row, swing, swing, swing

Posted by: Dan O at June 2, 2007 9:53 AM

Well, here in Crossfitqns we did 5 rounds of 15 squats, hill sprint, 15 squats, jog down... Quads are killing me.

Posted by: Justin at June 2, 2007 11:50 AM

god, i wish i had a 20lbs medicine ball down here. 5 sets of 25 20lbs dumbbells thrusters = death.

Posted by: dammit at June 2, 2007 12:18 PM

I think the sub is more like 15lbs each hand. At least that is what Keith had me use in the past.

Actually though, it's the thought of 150 pullups that has me paralyzed with fear.

Posted by: Hari at June 2, 2007 12:23 PM

I spoke too soon. I looked up the sub, and it is 20 lbs each hand. Apparently, Keith wend too each on me. I'm sure he'll make it up.

This is going to be awful!

Posted by: Hari at June 2, 2007 12:37 PM

one of the guys in the WOD example video is that stud who OHS'd his bodyweight 15 times. by the end of the movie he looks like he's about to have a stroke!

Posted by: dammit at June 2, 2007 12:49 PM

Thanks Michelle. I could also use a haircut. What does your daughter charge? :) I'm sure she's better than everyone at Supercuts.

So I couldn't make it to the park at 1030 because I woke up at 1230.
I vote for the class in the park tomorrow to start at Noon!!
C'mon night owls, Who's with me??

Posted by: A2 at June 2, 2007 1:10 PM

So what was the Central Park WOD today?

Posted by: Jeff at June 2, 2007 2:00 PM

Hey Jeff,
It was 5 rounds:
25 squats
25 pushups
30 pullups (I think)

I was sucking ass on the pullups, so I scaled back considerably on those.

Also drank what seemed like 2 liters of hot coffee at post-workout brunch. Mmmmmm.

Is anyone going to Dammits party tonight?

Posted by: A2 at June 2, 2007 2:16 PM

A2, I'm going to try to swing by the party at some point tonight. Email me your phone number or call me if you still have mine.

Posted by: Allison at June 2, 2007 2:34 PM

Is this a secret Fight Club party?

Posted by: Jeff at June 2, 2007 2:39 PM

noon tomorrow- i vote noon too! and A2-a blind cat could do a better job than supercuts!

Posted by: michelle at June 2, 2007 2:55 PM

Supercuts Supersucks

Posted by: A2 at June 2, 2007 2:57 PM

did the HQ WOD. 20:48, with 20lbs DB thrusters subbed for wall ball. goldang, that was hard.

we're celebrating my friend's birthday at 3 o cups (1st ave and 5th street, downstairs from the pizza restaurant) tonight. if you've never been there, it's a super dingy, kick-ass rock 'n roll bar. cheap drinks, bikers, yuppies, always a good time. gonna be there around 11 PM. you should come!

Posted by: dammit at June 2, 2007 3:12 PM

holy #*&#%^!! i thought i posted a good time, 'cause those dudes in the video were right around 19 minutes, but OPT posted an 11:48 and AFT got a 9:55!! (*#&(*#!!!

Posted by: dammit at June 2, 2007 3:18 PM

I'll be there

Posted by: rob at June 2, 2007 3:19 PM

I think there was an issue with altitude. Apparently these guys must have been way up in the mountains somewhere. Crossfit Colorado perhaps. I think that affected there times considerably. They probably would have done the WOD much faster on their home turf of SoCal.

Posted by: Kevin at June 2, 2007 4:26 PM

I'll be there too

Posted by: A2 at June 2, 2007 4:27 PM

I'm still getting over this cold. Damn these summer colds!! Im trying to take off and rest but I've been working like crazy this week. Seems like 8 hours of sleep is a fantasy at this point.

Posted by: Kevin at June 2, 2007 4:27 PM

Have fun at dammits party I 'd love to go but I'm bartending tonight, then I gotta work tomorrow morning again at 8am.

Posted by: Kevin at June 2, 2007 4:30 PM

Today's Official WOD 54:00 (Sub DB Thusters, 20 lb each)
Absolutely brutal.

Posted by: Hari at June 2, 2007 5:48 PM

ok so are we still keeping it for 10:30 or has someone made the executive decision for noon tomorrow?

Posted by: michelle at June 2, 2007 6:25 PM

Just finished my WOD:
21, 15, 9
walking lunges (21, 15, 9 each side)
squats
burpees

9:40

Posted by: A2 at June 2, 2007 7:43 PM

I got 7 huge mosquito bites on my body in the 10 minutes I was outside.

I miss the gym

Posted by: A2 at June 2, 2007 8:19 PM

When I was wandering through Central Park trying to find the playground, I saw at least one volleyball court. Immediately I thought of a sport I had heard of called "Hooverball".

Hooverball is basically volleyball played with a 4-6 pound medicine ball. There are some rules changes for safety (and reality) but then end game is supposed to be pretty challenging - supposedly 3x more intense than regular volleyball. A quick search shows that a couple other CrossFit branches have played around with it.

It has a respectable following back in my Baltimore/DC area. Here is the league page: http://www.hooverball.org/About/about.html If anyone would like to play tomorrow or sometime, let me know.

where is class going to held on monday morning?

Posted by: Brian at June 3, 2007 5:29 PM

Classes are back at the box as of tomorrow morning. We'll be modifying workouts to avoid any jumping/dropping, but don't worry--they'll still kick your ass.

Posted by: Allison at June 3, 2007 6:05 PM

I'm down for that Moon. Lets set it up!

Posted by: A2 at June 3, 2007 7:11 PM

are we able to do the snatches tomorrow or are we subbing something else?
